Trump Suggests Removal of World Cup Matches from Massachusetts, Olympic Games from LA
Former President Trump has yet again declared he would pressure FIFA to pull global soccer tournament events from a host city based on municipal politics, with the Boston region becoming the latest targeted location to encounter such warnings from the White House. Moreover, Trump suggested he would evaluate comparable measures against Los Angeles for the upcoming Olympic Games due to potential public safety risks.
Jurisdictional Limits and Possible Pressure
While Trump does not have direct legal authority to unilaterally remove either tournament, he is able to exert influence the organizing committees managing each competition to change venues.
Setting for Statements
The remarks were made during a press event with Argentina's leader Milei, who was at the White House following the revelation of a multibillion-dollar rescue package for the Argentine economy. Near the end of the meeting, a media member inquired Trump about a latest unauthorized gathering in the city where law enforcement were attacked and a cruiser was ignited. The journalist also asked if these incidents could cause the loss of hosting duties for the expanded World Cup.
“I would take them away,” he said regarding the World Cup matches, scheduled to be hosted at the Foxborough venue. “She is not good … they're radical left, and activists are taking over sections of downtown. That is a major claim, isn't it?”
Street Takeovers and Public Safety Concerns
Unauthorized gatherings, a social media-driven trend where groups of people congregate on city streets late at night to conduct vehicular acrobatics, have been a repeated nuisance in US urban areas since the coronavirus restrictions. Current such gatherings have turned violent in Massachusetts, specifically in the city. Nevertheless, these events are generally not considered linked to any distinct partisan agenda.
“When someone is failing, and I feel there are security risks, I will call the organization's president, who is outstanding, and suggest it should be shifted to another location,” the former president commented during the event. “And he would do that. He might not prefer the action, but he'd agree. Without hesitation, he'd comply.”
Organizational Alignment
FIFA President has publicly acknowledged his attempts to be publicly aligned with the US leader before the 2026 event, scheduled to be staged in numerous American venues across the United States along with two in the northern neighbor and three in Mexico. The organization's leader has participated at multiple White House functions, had Trump deliver the Club World Cup trophy after the championship match, and has even rescheduled his own organization’s congress to join Trump on a journey to the Gulf states this year.
Previous Threats
This has not stopped, Trump from warning about the cancellation of soccer events from additional American venues. In late September, the Washington city and the Bay Area metropolis faced comparable statements, with Trump claiming both cities were “governed by far-left extremists who don’t know what they're managing,” while challenging the security conditions of both areas and claiming that games could be removed.
Official Rebuttal
Victor Montagliani rejected Trump’s statements when he commented subsequently at a gathering in the UK capital.
“This is our competition, our responsibility, the organization determines such choices,” he stated. “With all due respect to current world leaders, football is bigger than political figures and football will endure their regime and their leadership. It's the beauty of our game, that it is more significant than a single person and more important than a nation.”
During the event, Trump’s answer to a question about the Massachusetts city veered into a parallel statement regarding the LA Olympic event.
“If I thought Los Angeles was not going to be prepared properly, I'd relocate it to an alternate venue if necessary,” he remarked. “Regarding that event I’d probably have to get a alternative consent, but we will take that action.”
Official consent Trump refers to would need to come via the IOC. Their leader, she, was chosen to her role in March and has not yet hold a public appearance with the former president, but she indicated that she hopes for a meeting with him at a future time.
Additional Criticism
The former president also questioned the state's leader Newsom’s response of recent blazes, saying that a comparable scenario could lead to the cancellation of the Olympics.
“In case the governor doesn’t play ball, we will have to be very tough,” Trump stated.
The warning was similarly direct for the Massachusetts city.
“Boston better address these issues,” Trump stated. “That’s all my message.”
