Oxford Union Future Leader Ousted Following Charlie Kirk Posts
The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after losing a vote of confidence that came after his disputed online comments about the conservative activist.
The motion against George Abaraonye achieved the required super-majority to remove him from office, according to an statement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The controversy began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to celebrate the death of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in the United States.
According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The president-elect is also reported to have written in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students seeming to welcome the incident.
Vote Outcome
The vote of confidence took place over the recent days, with outcomes revealed on this week.
Official notices indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.
The notice stated that the future president was considered to have stepped down in accordance with the society's regulations.
Election Controversies
Voting operations were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been stopped because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response unequivocally denied that any representative acting for George had engaged in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Ongoing Dispute
The student stated that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as president-elect.
His statement added that George was "grateful and honored to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who supported a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Critics have said that any decision to keep him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".
External Reactions
On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The message criticized the society of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a ideological rival".
The statement warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".
The Oxford Union had earlier criticized Mr Abaraonye's remarks after Kirk's death and stated that complaints filed against him had been referred for official review.
The student leader had been one of multiple members to discuss with the activist at the union in spring.
